PLEASE

SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee . This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.
This virus acts in the following manner:
It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title:
"You've received a Post Card from a Family member".

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so
that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+ del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York , according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.
So don't open any mails with subject: "A Post Card from ..." As soon as you get the mail, delete it !! Even if

you know the sender !!!

Please pass this mail to all of your friends.

Forward this to everyone in your address book. I'm sure most people, like myself, would rather receive this notice 25 times than not at All.

I checked this out and it is a real virus. There are variations, and it would be a good idea to check them out too. I went to Google and entered " snopes postcard " and this is the URL for their answer:

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

It is real. It is not a hoax.

Here is a link to the snopes page:

Thanks for the warning , you are quite correct in saying it is a real virus , however the results are not as drastic as destroying your hard drive , on the pages you reference there is a link to

W32/Zhelatin.gen!eml
(McAfee)

which appears to be the payload of this particular message , the idea is to take over your computer to use as part of a Botnet , IE:- to take part in large scale spamming , the link also states that it attacks unpatched Windows machines , which is a reason to keep your windows installation patched with the latest updates ,and also to run an up to date virus checker , and Software Firewall like Zonealarm , the tone of the e-mail "The most destructive virus ever" has been used for years to panic people into relaying the email to everybody they know .

Oh also if you google this
Quote:
"A Post Card from ..." As soon as you get the mail, delete it !!

you will find that this email has been popping up in loads of different forums I got about 441 hits but they seem to be only forums , and not AV vendor sites.

i just got an email from supposedly Mcafee so be warned that this mail says

Quote:
Overview -
Avert Labs HOAX Notice!!

McAfee Avert Labs would like to inform you of an email HOAX.

This email message is just a HOAX, currently we know of no other message that the user will receive about the HOAX as the initial email states. AVERT has not received any report of a user's hardware being damaged by receiving the email.

We are advising users who receive the email to delete it and DO NOT pass it on as this is how an email HOAX propagates.

but in the recieved box it is a company i have never heard of http://vil.nai.co~~~~m/vil/content/v_143~~~~338.htm

i have changed the address for obvious reasons

we must all be vigilant

That address is McAfee`s threat centre address , perfectly safe , if you look on the McAfee site they have this particular threat at no 2 , so there is obviously a resurgence of this pest at the moment.

My wife says "Microsoft, or any of their employees would not email anybody about a virus, they have no reason to do so, and it would not serve any purpose". Apparently they (Microsoft) do not 'classify' viruses and have nothing to do with this sort of thing. My wife is a PC expert who works in the field and knows what she's talking about.
