    Ronnie Hazlehurst has died

Composer Ronnie Hazlehurst, who wrote the theme tunes to "Are You Being Served?", "Blankety Blank" and "Last Of The Summer Wine", has died aged 79, the BBC said on Tuesday.

During a career spanning more than 40 years, he composed the music for some of the BBC's most popular shows.

His name appeared on the credits of "To The Manor Born", "The Two Ronnies", "Yes, Minister" and "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em".

"Ronnie was the composer of many of the best-loved signature tunes of the last 40 years of television and some of his work is still heard today," said BBC Executive Producer Jon Plowman.

Hazlehurst died in hospital on the Channel Islands after suffering a stroke. His partner Jean Fitzgerald told the BBC: "He was just a perfectionist in his profession and a very kind and generous man."

Born and educated in Cheshire, he began his career as a professional trumpet player before working as an arranger, conductor and composer for the BBC.

He conducted several Royal Variety Performances and was the musical director at three Eurovision Song Contests.

Ronnie and his Orchestra were guests at a Laurel and HarDay at Wigan a few years ago. He conducted his orchestra through some of his L&H tunes and had a question and answer session. It was a very memorable day. A fine man with a good reputation as a musician.

Ronnie was a very active member of Helpmates UK and his "Music Box"
recordings set the mood at tent meetings. He traveled with us to Sons
of the Desert events at home and abroad. Ronnie's band played for the
Sons at Leeds Castle in 1991, the Las Vegas convention in 1992, and
more recently at the Laurel and HarDAY in Wigan.

Ronnie Hazlehurst was a warm, kind, generous man and lots of fun to be
with. In 1990 a coachload of Helpmates made the pilgrimage to
Ulverston to celebrate Stan's cententary. We had arranged to pick up
Ronnie by the M1 sliproad in Hendon. Friday afternoon traffic held us
up and he'd been waiting for us for some time. Two minutes later we
pulled in at the next services for the driver's mandatory 45-minute
break.

When a member of our party lost his onward ticket from LAX to Las
Vegas, Ronnie bought him a new one. No wonder we loved him so much.

One of my regrets, and I have a few, is that on this very forum I made a disparaging remark about Ronnie Hazlehurst and his music. I only realised a while later that I had mistook the name for someone else entirely! Hazlehurst's theme tunes are legendary, as was a lot of his library music.

Sorry Ronnie, RIP

Ronnie was interviewed for the Nutty Nut News Show at Leeds Castle during the 1984 UK Convention and his first comment was that he loved L&H since he was a little boy.
His love of their music was so great that he traveled to California in 1980 to clear the copyright and discover the title names for the L&H music, and in the process became good friends with Marvin Hatley.
He will be sadly missed but his musical efforts will always be there for us to enjoy.

Funnilly enough I was reading Ronnie Corbett's book about the Two Ronnies recently & he mentions Ronnie (the 3rd Ronnie!?) & says what a great guy he is.
