Comedian and fellow 'son' Sir Norman Wisdom is recovering well at his Isle of Man home after undergoing heart surgery.

The pint-sized comic, who has been in the entertainment industry for seven decades, had a pacemaker fitted in an hour-long operation in Liverpool.

Sir Norman, who turned 91 in February, flew by helicopter to the city's Cardiothoracic Centre on Friday and returned home later that evening.

The surgery followed a routine hospital check-up which revealed a weak pulse.

His agent Johnny Mans said: "Norman is in good spirits and already up and about.

"The pacemaker will give him a new lease of life and he is looking forward to getting on with work."

The Laurel & Hardy Forum would like to take this opportunity to wish Sir Norman a speedy recovery.

I've always loved Sir Norman!
When I was about 8 or 9, he was appearing on Skegness Pier. They were sold out of tickets and i so badly wanted to see him live. Well I waited for ages at the base of the pier, hoping to at least see him. Well finally he came bounding up the steps in dark glasses so as not to be recognised (how could you not?). He was very gracious and signed an autograph for me and told me he was sorry I couldn't get in. That was a special moment for me.

Well fast forward twenty years or so and I had this puppet chat show called Thing's Thing on The Children's Channel. Guess who was top of my wanted guest list? Yup, Norman. He agreed and even insisted on wearing his Gump costume. He was awesome as always. It was hard for me to be cool I remember. I'll try to post a picture of it below. Notice the teeshirt I'm wearing... HA HAAA!!

Mike that's a fascinating photo. I am due to meet Norman again in August, I'm sure he would like to see that photo. I will tell him you are in the sons too and I will mention your documentary. (Hey, he might even want to contribute to it ). Love that T shirt bye the way Wink

Thanks René!

I have several snaps of Norman and this character of mine. Perhaps I can send them to you Ross if you like? That's wonderful you will be seeing him next month! I really hope this surgery allows Sir Norman to live to be 7 feet tall Very Happy

When I started on this documentary I did contact Norman and Ray Alan's managers. For some reason it was not to be at the time. However things change and it could still happen in the future. Mostly I realised my story was 1947 specifically and they (along with Kenny Baker) would be better suited to a documentary about the later tours. So who knows? It's all good. If they agree, I'll definitely interview them.

Incidentally, some of my other favourite guests were Ray Alan and Lord Charles, Barbara Windsor and Stanley Unwin. All classics!

Well here's to you Sir Norman and a heartfelt thanks to all you've given us!!! Did anyone read about his meeting with Chaplin? Pretty cool stuff! Wish there were pictures.

Three of my favoite people , well four if you count Lord Charles as a person Wink

Stanley Unwin was marvelous , I used to love hearing him twist the English Language into "Unwinisms" , which although sounding gibberish , actually made a kind of sense Shocked , you are very lucky to have worked with him Mike , sadly he is I think , very sadly forgotten by most people these days.

Very Happy He hee.. well Jim passed away in 1990 and we made this in about 1993. Jim was always interested in what others were creating though and I think he would have approved. We actually made a point to not make "Muppets" but develop our own style of puppets.

This had brief airings on HTV and later Channel 4. Lack of publicity and bad slots helped to keep this a well kept secret. So now we are making plans to relaunch it. We worked our butts off and had an impossibly low budget for this but it was immense fun.

Deep Joy Wink
