Tricks from L&H movies

Postby oh my on Sun Oct 09, 2005 12:24 pm

Remember the "earsy, nosey, kneesy" from Fra Diavolo (The Devil's Brother). Or ripping the finger apart from "Bohemian Girl"?

Can you help me out where the "Hat against the wall" (one leaning against a wall and miraculously moving his hat this way) and other tricks were found so often imitated by us watching all those classics then?

Hi 'oh my' and welcome to the forum. I'm not sure I understand your question, could you perhaps rephrase it? Are you asking how the tricks were done or where they originated from?

Regarding the origin of Kneesy Earsy Nosey and Finger Wiggle, here's an interesting fact from Stan's niece Nancy Wardell which was featured in this months Bowler Dessert Online bulletin....

"My grandfather used to do Kneesie-Earsie-Nosey for his children and grandchildren, plus Finger-Wiggle. When Stan told my mother he was going to put it in his next film we never thought it would go round the Laurel and Hardy fans worldwide. Amazing!"

I am sure I read that Pee-Wee was an old Lancahire Childrens game that Stan used to play him self , I imagine a lot of the "Tricks" originated either in Stans childhood games or in the Music Halls , which is were Stan learned his trade

The 'Hat-against-the-wall' routine is from 'TOWED IN A HOLE'. It's one of the things that Stan does to while away the time after Ollie has locked him in the cabin.

And welcome to the forum, Oh My!!

Thank you, that was quick. I'll get the DVD out immediately.

Well, as I was asked to rephrase, my intention behind this thread was to help remember some of those tricks that made us laugh. With the Burning Thumb I always wondered why the promotional picture was apparently not directly out of Way out West.

I think you'll find that most of us on here are pretty quick where the films themselves are concerned! :D

There are too many! One of my favs is to drop something in front of me, then as I bend over to pick it up I kick it just out of reach....ad infinitum. Haven't managed to light my thumb yet though. (How many of you have played 'blind' noughts & crosses ala towed in a hole...I know I have.)

The "Hat routine" was also in "Bonnie Scotland" when the boys have to clean the parade ground , love the little dance routine in that.
And Al you`d fit right in at the Kneesie Earsie Nosie World championship at the Laurel and Harday (hope your practising for next year Ross :D ) , Oh and the judges CAN be bribed

I love the one the little trick Stan does sometimes where he attempts to put his hat on but it does a little jump off his head before finally succeeding... :D

The ear wiggle is another classic. Dean will explain how it's done with threads.
